What materials do you need to ascend a character?
Ascending a Genshin Impact character from level 1 to 90 requires passing through 6 ascension phases. Each phase unlocks a new level range and demands ascension crystals (in 4 rarities), local boss materials from their region, monster materials in 3 tiers, and from phase 3 onward, boss materials obtained from weekly or world bosses.
The total Mora to take a 5-star character from level 1 to 90 is 420,000 Mora. For 4-star characters, the cost is identical.
How to obtain ascension materials efficiently
Ascension crystals are obtained from the local boss associated with each character — the same boss that also provides the exclusive local boss material. Both are farmed in the same place.
Monster materials (masks, bones, feathers…) drop from common enemies and can be crafted from lower to higher tier at the crafting bench. Boss materials require resin to claim; plan carefully when to farm so you do not waste it. Check the weapon calculator if you also need to level up your equipment.
Is it worth taking every character to level 90?
For support or sub-DPS characters, it is often enough to ascend to phase 6 (level 80/90) without actually reaching 90, since the stat bonus from the final stretch is small compared to the cost. Characters that scale with level (such as those who deal damage with normal attacks) do benefit from reaching level 90.

How much Mora do I need to take a character to level 90?
A 5-star or 4-star character needs exactly 420,000 Mora to ascend from level 1 to 90 through all 6 phases. If you already have some materials, the calculator will subtract what you have and give you the remaining total.
What are ascension crystals?
These are materials in 4 tiers (sliver, fragment, chunk and gemstone) obtained from each region's local boss. Each character uses a specific type: for example, Mondstadt characters use Brilliant Diamond crystals, while Liyue characters use Agnidus Agate.
Can I craft monster materials?
Yes. At the crafting bench you can convert 3 lower-tier materials into 1 higher-tier material. This is useful if you have many basic materials saved up and need higher-rarity ones for the final phases.
When is character ascension unlocked?
The first ascension (level 20 to 40) unlocks after completing the Prologue quest. Adventure Rank also limits the max level: you need AR 15 for phase 2, AR 25 for phase 3, AR 30 for phase 4, AR 35 for phase 5 and AR 45 for phase 6.
What is the difference between local boss and weekly boss materials?
Local boss materials come from Hypostases, Regisvines and other world bosses that respawn every 3 minutes and do not cost resin. Weekly boss materials drop from weekly bosses (Lupus Boreas, Dvalin…) or world bosses that require Original Resin to claim rewards.
