How does pity work in Genshin Impact?

The pity system in Genshin Impact guarantees that the more pulls you make without obtaining a 5-star, the higher your probability on each subsequent pull. The base probability of pulling a 5-star is 0.6% per pull.

The system has two key thresholds: soft pity and hard pity. From pity 74 onward, the rate increases progressively with each pull until it reaches 100% at pull 90.

What are soft pity and hard pity?

Soft pity begins at pull 74: from that point the probability of pulling a 5-star rises by approximately 6% per additional pull. Hard pity is reached at pull 90, where the probability is 100% — meaning the game guarantees a 5-star on that pull at most.

Most players obtain their 5-star between pulls 75 and 89, already within the soft pity zone.

What does having a guarantee mean in Genshin Impact?

When you pull a 5-star on the character banner, there is a 50% chance it will be the featured character and a 50% chance it will be a standard character. If you lose the 50/50 and the 5-star you obtain is a standard character, the next time you pull a 5-star on that banner type it will always be the featured character. This is known as having an active guarantee.

How many wishes do I need to secure a 5-star character?

In the worst case you will need 180 wishes to secure the banner character (90 for the first 5-star if you lose the 50/50, plus 90 for the second with the guarantee active). In practice, with accumulated pity and a guarantee, most players get it sooner. Use the calculator above to estimate your exact situation.

Frequently asked questions about Genshin Impact pity

What is pity in Genshin Impact?

Pity is the counter of accumulated pulls since your last 5-star. The higher your pity, the greater your chance of pulling a 5-star on the next wish, thanks to the game's soft pity and hard pity system.

When does soft pity start in Genshin Impact?

Soft pity begins at pull 74. From that point, the probability of pulling a 5-star increases considerably with each additional pull, reaching 100% at pull 90 (hard pity).

What is hard pity in Genshin Impact?

Hard pity is pull 90. At that pull the game guarantees a 5-star with 100% probability, without exception. It is the maximum number of pulls you can ever need to obtain a 5-star.

What happens if I lose the 50/50 in Genshin Impact?

If you pull a 5-star that is not the featured banner character, you activate the guarantee: the next 5-star you pull on that banner type will always be the featured character. The guarantee carries over even if you switch banners of the same type.

Does the guarantee carry over between banners?

Yes. The 50/50 guarantee is preserved across all event character banners. If you lose the 50/50 on one banner and do not pull again, your guarantee will still be active on the next character banner.

How many wishes do I need to guarantee the featured character?

In the worst case you need 180 wishes: 90 if you lose the 50/50 plus 90 with the guarantee active. With accumulated pity and an active guarantee, the maximum drops to 90 wishes. Use the calculator to see your exact estimate.
